Treble Choir Recruitment

We are always happy to welcome new members for the Treble Choir. Kevin Duggan, the Director of Music at Dunblane Cathedral, is especially keen to hear from parents of boys and girls who are in Primary 4 or 5 this year.

As well as gaining the opportunity to sing outstanding music in an enviable setting, the Treble Choir also get proper musical training. Following the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) training scheme - see here for details - the children learn about voice production and music reading, and work towards gaining badges - the colour of the ribbon denoting the stage which they have reached.

The Treble Choir consists of boys and girls aged between 8 and 13. We practice on a Thursday at 6.30pm, and with the adult choir from 7.30pm to 8.15pm. The Trebles sing at the regular Sunday morning service in the Cathedral during term-time and meet for musical training at 9.30am on the Sunday prior to a short rehearsal with the full choir at 9.55am. There is voluntary attendance at Christmas and Easter Day services, and weddings.

There are also occasional special services and concerts, broadcasts, tours and social events. Visits to the theatre, theme parks and other non-musical excursions are regular features of the Treble Choir. Members of the Treble Choir have attended RSCM courses in York and Durham Cathedrals and two have previously reached the semi-finals of the BBC Chorister of the Year competition.

At a time when there is perhaps less time available for singing in schools, choirs such as ours provide a unique opportunity for potentially gifted children. Quite apart from musical training, the experience of belonging to a choir also entails elements of responsibility and - above all - teamwork. It is probably true to say that those who sang in a choir when they were young will cite this as being one of the most formative experiences of their youth.

On a lighter note, the Trebles devise and perform a Summer Concert for charity each year. Previously we performed songs from "Oliver!", "Les Miserables" and "Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat".

Interested parents should contact Kevin to arrange a simple chat (or to get more information) by telephoning him on 01786-880476 or 07413-034915, or by clicking here. We are not looking for musical genius, or even outstanding musical talent - that will develop! - but rather for enthusiastic children with a good musical ear. Note: there are no membership or teaching costs associated with being a member of Dunblane Cathedral Choirs, Adult or Treble. Everything is provided by the Cathedral. Trips outwith the Cathedral are heavily subsidised by the Choir but MAY incur a small charge to defray costs, if necessary.
