Thank you to Sharon for sharing with us her thoughts and delicious recipe for flatbread.

Jesus told many parables about sowing seeds and the importance of bread in biblical time. One of his miracles was when he changed 5 loaves and 2 fishes into food to feed a crowd of 5000 listening to his preaching. (John 6, 1-14)

Jesus celebrated with his family and friends the Jewish feast of Passover or unleavened bread; this was when the barley was harvested. Unleavened bread is free from yeast, it is typically dense and flat, rather like pitta breads today.

Activity

Have a go at making this tasty and easy unleavened bread recipe,

Ingredients

·       2 cups (470 ml) bread flour

·       ¾ cup (180 ml) milk or cold water

·       2 tablespoons olive oil

·       1 teaspoon salt

·       ½ medium onion chopped finely

·       1 garlic clove minced

Preheat oven 450°F (260°C).

Combine all ingredients with the water to form dough and knead for 3 minutes.

Divide into 8 balls. Flatten each into a thin round and prick with a fork. Bake on a greased cookie sheet for 10 to 15 minutes in oven

 Ideas of how to serve

  • Top with hummus and chopped fresh vegetables
  • Top with cheese and peppers
  • Use as a crust for a home-made pizza.

Bread was so important in feeding families that it is part of the Lord’s prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses and we forgive those who trespass against us,

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, the power and glory,

forever and ever.

Amen.
